In this context, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on David Milch and on Steven Moffat. The two, I think, have a lot in common. Both fall into the auteur designation, but a large part of their reps come from working on other people's shows (Bochco for Milch and Davies for Moffat). Moreover, their shows are more ecclectic than Whedon's or Sorkin's. Going from Coupling to Jekyll? Or Deadwood to John from Cincinnati (which, admittedly, I still have not seen)? Clearly, stylistic elements carry over. But it is hard to pin then to a genre.
