An issue of gaming philosophy(RANT alert)
Feb. 17th, 2003 02:18 pmGaming in it's myriad forms takes up a good deal of my time and mental effort. I play in games, I run games and I am even trying to start an academic campaign to make role-playing games the subject of serious academic study. So overall, I take my gaming very seriously and there are some things that I hate about it.
1. I hate social actions. I hate it when a scene that can be executed through consensual role-play and beneficial meta-gaming is reduced to a series of dice rolls or RPS throws.
2. I hate when abilities and powers become effects and numbers. When having melee 4 is simply a chance to retest 4 melee tests rather than a significant touchstone of your character. When (and I apologize for complaining about a real incident but this is what got me thinking) Majesty is not a supernatural power that makes people love you but is instead a force-field that you just have to wait to be turned off. These things annoy me because I try to treat everything on a sheet or in play as a part of the scene rather than a mathematical conflict.
3. I hate when players don't work together on a game. I have been guilty of this as well, I'm sure. I don't mean characters, they aren't supposed to work together well and I actually often dislike it when they do. What I mean is that everyone is there to tell a story, to have fun. Fun is not about one person "winning" but about everyone participating in a greater product.
4. I hate when players become focused on their characters being the epitome of the game. No good LARP is about one character. Few good LARPs are about less than a tenth of the game. The best LARPs are equally about everyone within.
I am sorry about the rant but these things are on my mind and I feel like venting them.
