Before election day, I'd like to talk a bit about felons and the right to vote. Right now, it is illegal for a convicted felon to vote in a presidential election in many states. I consider this to be a travesty against democracy and proof that our prison system is viewed by the government as punitive rather than rehabilitating.
Here is why I believe that felons should be allowed to vote. The assumption that our judicial system is based on is that sentencing measures attempt to prevent recidivism. The assumption is that by doing the time, the criminal has "paid his debt to society". Thus, once through with prison time and certified safe to re-enter general society, the felon should not be denied participation in the democratic process or in any law abiding pursuit.
