LJ often makes people's lives seem more angsty than they are, because not all that many people make random posts saying "I'm happy!" It's more "OMGIhatemylifeeverythingsucksandIwanttodie." To put it less flippantly, people are more likely to post when they're down than when they're up, because when they're up, they often have better things to do than post to LJ. In general, if LJ makes some's angst quotient seem like an 8.5, it's probably more like 6.5-7.
