I want to comment about the genius of Ken Burns. I am a huge Ken Burns fan and there's a moment in his Baseball series that encapsulates what I love about his stuff.
In the first episode, he is talking about the historical origins of baseball and he gets to the part about baseball being played during the Civil War, subject of his earlier documentary, and the music cue of Ashokan Farewell, the main theme from said earlier documentary, plays in the background.
He knows how resonant his images are and makes an intertextual music joke to his fans. It's what a history/media geek lives for.

yeah ... I don't know if I can say that I love his stuff. It's always a little bit too sappy for my documentary-watching tastes. But I can definitely see what you mean about that segment of his baseball documentary. I liked it for much the same reason.

when [livejournal.com profile] kilpikona and [livejournal.com profile] claydust were in town, several of us gathered at [livejournal.com profile] kuribeh's for a relaxed shindig of sorts. at some point, i took custody of a fussy piper, and started humming ashokan farewell to her. [livejournal.com profile] seanaface started in on a counterpoint harmony, and it was quite lovely.

ken burns is my hero.

the end.
