It's a bit more complicated than that, too. The Taliban were our allies during the soviet conflict. We funded them in their efforts to take back Afghanistan from the Soviets, who they opposed on religious grounds.
Given that the fundamentalist governments of Central and Southwest Asia have risen on opposition to American intervention in the region, we have to ask ourselves how much of their activity is our responsibility in the end.
