There has been some chatter on The Hill recently on re-instituting military conscription, aka the draft. This has provoked me more than a bit

I suppose it comes down to what the relationship between the country and the citizen should be. It is my firm belief that the government should not have the right to demand that you kill for their interests, especially not in a democracy. If a cause does not inspire enough people to join and possibly die, and too few people can be enticed economically into the armies, then the cause is democratically not worth fighting for. It's a sort of vote, and if the United States goes back to forcing people into military service, then the government will have truly admitted it's hypocrisy, that this is a nation ruled by the whims of the rich rather than the needs of the people. I feel bad partially because by the law, I cannot be sent to the army. I have conscientious objector status dating back to birth. But nobody should ever have to do that again.

The one tiny ray of light in that is, if they even start talking too loudly about re-instituting the draft (let alone trying to pursue it seriously), I don't imagine that will improve their re-election chances any. The political ad pretty much writes itself:

"George W. Bush lied to the American people to begin a war with Iraq. Then he ignored the advisers who told him it wouldn't be a quick an easy victory, and refused to give them the materials and personnel they really needed. Then he told the U.N. to bugger off and turned the war into a clusterfuck. Now, with Iraq a sea of chaos and bloodshed instead of the peaceful democracy we were supposed to be creating, he wants to force YOU to go finish HIS war."

Without the profanity, of course.
