Apr. 10th, 2005 03:00 pmthere is a table sign at Soma(my coffeehouse of choice)that says 74% of college men would intervene to prevent a sexual assault. This statistic raises some interesting questions in my mind, some methodological, some social.
The first question I have is methodological. The social scientist in me wonders what exactly they asked in these questionnaires. So I consulted the RAINN website. According to their info they took existing surveys and developed a model for this concept. That answers the first question, but not the second.
What the fuck is wrong with that remaining 26 percent of men? How an anyone be so fucking apathetic or heartless to allow this sort of thing to happen. It pisses me off that people could possibly think that they don't have a responsibility to prevent rape in every way possible. that apathy is why there is suffering in the world. I think that RAINN wants these numbers to look good, but the statistician in me looks at the 83% statistic of men respecting their partner's wishes about sexual activity and despairs at the remaining 17%. Even assuming one sexual partner per respondent, that's over 300 rapes. We need 100 fucking percent, we need 0 rapes, and seeing the number just makes me want to kill people.
I think one of the next volunteer things I'll coordinate is an anti-rape postering campaign and donation drive for local resources.
