As much as I think that's a great article and I mostly agree with it in that people should try to expand their monkeysphere and understand that everyone is a person, there are times in which it is good, and necessary for your own wellbeing, to make sure people stay outside of your monkeysphere. (I feel that sentence was far too long)
My job is an excellent example. It would be one of the most depressing jobs in the world if all, or even most, of the people I deal with were inside my monkeysphere. Instead of this being the best job I've ever had it would, without a doubt, be the worst.
If I actually saw each and every one of these people who were filing bankruptcy as a person instead of a series of paperwork I needed to file, I don't think I'd be able to get up in the morning.
So, as nice as it is to be idealistic and say, "you should try and remember that everyone is a person just as much as you are." It would simply not be helpful, and potentially downright harmful if I did. At least as far as my job is concerned.
Tony - The point is, however, that you can't possibly include all of those people in your monkeysphere, nor should you. What you can do, however, is be aware that they are outside of it, and try to limit the amount to which you let yourself dehumanize them. This doesn't mean that you need to empathize with all of them, only that the effort is worthwhile.
Remember this: When you represent yourself to someone within your monkeysphere, you represent only yourself. When you represent yourself to someone outside of your monkeysphere, you represent everyone outside of their monkeysphere! -Jeremiah
