The best male role model for American youth has died. Fred Rogers, host of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was one of the most influential people in my development as a human being. He showed me that men do not have to be aggressive. He was nice to those around him and accepting of everyone and that was a good way to be. He showed me that adults could still travel to the land of make believe, that even as a grown-up it's still okay to talk to a puppet or a stuffed animal. He showed me the value of community. He may have been teased and parodied by the mass media, but he never got angry about it. He never lost his temper. He dealt with things through love, imagination and kindness and his death is a loss to the world. I know I would not be who I am without him.
